An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind

"Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love." - Martin Luther King Jr.

"What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?" - Mahatma Gandhi

Dear friends,

The events of these past years, months, weeks, days and hours seem to have brought the world on the verge of an Armageddon. Violence is everywhere and from violence nothing good can come out.

This blog wants to appeal to NON VIOLENCE as the only, real answer to the madness of our times and as the only way to reach peace and justice.

I re-publish today an article I wrote last year on Thursday, July 07, 2005 in the immediate aftermath of the London bombings.

In peace and solidarity,
Gabriele Zamparini

London Blasts: Don't let them win
By Gabriele Zamparini

London, the city where I live, has been attacked. Ordinary people are paying the price, once again. Killing innocent people is an infamous act, never legitimate. Never justified. Never. But if we want to understand what’s going on without hysteria, we must look at the full picture. Again, not to apologize. But to understand. And hopefully to do something to build a better world.

I was living in New York when the September 11th attacks happened. I saw the people of New York meeting spontaneously in the streets and the squares of Downtown Manhattan. Staying together. Talking and singing for peace. Not revenge. I witnessed how the power used those events for its own agenda. I remember the manipulation of the events by the media, that corporate media that was beating the drums for war. And I feared the rise of a totalitarian regime.

There are still many questions on what exactly happened that day. But since, Afghanistan has been bombed and innocent people there, people like you and me, are still dying because of our Governments’ actions. Iraq has been invaded and occupied. No connections whatsoever linked Iraq to the September 11th attacks. And none of the alleged reasons given by our ruthless leaders were true. More than 100,000 Iraqi innocent civilians have been murdered, most of them women and children. Many young boys and girls from the United States, the United Kingdom, from Italy and many other countries lost their lives. Young boys and girls who didn't even start their lives were sent to kill other people, people who did nothing to them or to their own country. They were sent far away from home, through a brain washing process that involves complicity and unity by all sides of the establishment.

And then the massive human rights violation at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib…

All this and much more, we were told, was necessary to fight the “War on Terror”. But war IS terror.

All this and much more, we were told, was necessary to keep our cities safe. Then Madrid and now London.

All this and much more, we were told, was necessary to build democracy in Iraq. Yet, no Iraqi wants foreign occupation.

In this day of sorrow, our solidarity and our thoughts must go to the innocent victims of these cruel and infamous acts in London. But our love for these brothers and sisters must not be an empty and hypocritical gesture of circumstance or convenience.

This is a time for reason, honesty and open discussion. Those who target innocent civilians are infamous terrorists who deserve our contempt and must be held accountable. Always. Doesn’t matter if they terrorize innocent civilians with a bomb placed on a bus or with much more expensive and sophisticated weaponry paid for by our tax money. Let’s not let them win.

***

I have been asked to clarify my thought in relation to the Peoples' right to Resist Foreign aggressions.

My piece was about violence in general and violence against civilians in particular.

Peoples have the right - and international law recognizes this right - to defend themselves against foreign aggressions.

I have always supported the Peoples' right to RESIST illegal, violent, military, foreign aggressions, invasions and occupations.

On a broader issue, we need also to consider that in modern warfare, 90% of the victims of all conflicts are civilians.

There is no doubt in my mind that all the moral and legal responsibilities for this carnage has to be found in the Western governments and their supporters.

Does this mean you condemn Hizbollah? If not, why not?

Meanwhile, are you going to answer my previous question (in response to the post below), or are you willing to concede that you prefer a good story to the facts (just like the hacks you love to lampoon)?

Dear Daniel Simpson,

I know you are a mainstream media journalist so I guess you can read...

I condemn all violence coming from all sides. It's sad that people like you don't understand the causes of violence and see only violence when it's against "us".

And you, do you condemn the terrorist Israeli government? Do you condemn the terrorist UK government? Do you condemn the terrorist US government?

Instead of harassing those who are trying to do something in this violent madness, why don't you join those who are doing something to stop it?

Violence starts inside our minds and souls.

Hypocrisy is violence too.

Love,
Gabriele Zamparini

I see you remain a master of projection, as well as missing the point.

I condemn all violence coming from all sides.

How refreshing to learn that you haven't completely lost the capacity to speak plainly. Perhaps you might consider doing so more often instead of hiding behind sub-Chomskyian opacity as if it were either radical or clever.

And you, do you condemn the terrorist Israeli government? Do you condemn the terrorist UK government? Do you condemn the terrorist US government?

Yes, yes and yes. Repeatedly and often.

Instead of harassing those who are trying to do something in this violent madness, why don't you join those who are doing something to stop it?

What do you imagine you're achieving by making things up (never mind inventing distinctions such as you against the unenlightened)?

Violence starts inside our minds and souls.

And your point is, Mr "purer than pure" (copyright Tony Blair)?

Hypocrisy is violence too.

Healer, heal thyself.

Love (and kisses),
Gabriele Zamparini

PS you still haven't answered the original simple question, for obvious reasons...

Dear Daniel Simpson,

I suggest you to read this article by Cindy Sheehan

I hope it can help you to be less angry.

Love,
Gabriele Zamparini
PS Really the last reply. Best wishes, honestly.

Blogger Daniel Simpson said...

I hope it can help you to be less angry.

As I was saying above... (although for you, like Rumsfeld, absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence)

Incidentally, you might like to consult the Media Lens archive. This reference is particularly pertinent:

"Somehow they have to get rid of the stuff. You can't deal with the [dissident] arguments, that's plain; for one thing you have to know something, and most of these people don't know anything. Secondly, you wouldn't be able to answer the arguments because they're correct. Therefore what you have to do is somehow dismiss it. So that's one technique, 'It's just emotional, it's irresponsible, it's angry.'"

Sincerely warmly,
Daniel

PS - still silent on the glaring untruth, I see.

I think you are avoiding Daniel Simpson's questions, Gabriele...

But I digress. In this post you seem to completely contradict your post on the Zidane debacle from a few weeks back. There, according to you, he was the victim only and was totally correct to use violence after receiving verbal abuse. But now it seems you don't think this way anymore? Now you would condemn Zidane's actions as well as those of the Italian player's name (whose name escapes me at the moment)? Can you please clarify your position?

Also,

"Instead of harassing those who are trying to do something in this violent madness, why don't you join those who are doing something to stop it?"

This comment is very strange if one considers your numerous posts and comments about Iraq Body Count, wouldn't you say? Doesn't it also undermine everything Medialens is doing? I mean the bulk of the criticism there is towards the supposedly more progressive and independent media and its writers. The people who are more on 'our' side than the bulk of the media around us. It's a serious question, I'm not trying to be a wise-ass.

Thanks for your time.

I apologise, Gabriele. It seems I was too quick to credit you with being clear. You say you condemn all violence and yet you say you "have always supported the Peoples' right to RESIST illegal, violent, military, foreign aggressions, invasions and occupations."

So it seems then that you don't after all condemn violence, or "appeal to NON VIOLENCE as the only, real answer to the madness of our times".

You go on to say:

There is no doubt in my mind that all the moral and legal responsibilities for this carnage has to be found in the Western governments and their supporters.

All? Are you sure? It seems once again that you cannot possibly mean what you write, unless you're a delusional fantasist.

From Fisk's latest:

They speak to me with anger about Israel but choose not to discuss the depth of cynicism of the Shia Hizbollah who provoked Israel's brutality by capturing two of its soldiers.

You might do well to reflect on that comment, Gabriele, given your preposterous assertion that "all the moral and legal responsibilities for this carnage has to be found in the Western governments and their supporters."

Kindest tidings,

At this point trying to lay blame for what triggered what in the killing fields is fruitless. Let's lay the blame on adults of the world that have taught their children hate for centuries and then cry out in agony when their children die in wars.
How many generations of hate in the so-called civilized world will there be before we take the guns out of the cribs of our children?
The American culture is the one I know best so it becomes the one I use to make the point of the militarism of our children.
Violence packaged as video games and movies to entertain are a big part of what our children grow up with in their lives. Football and major sports become "life and death" struggles.
Toys like GI Joe and all the other fantasy combatants are the norm for the little ones starting at the time they walk.
The rape and pillage of the planet is most likely the factor that will kill the inhabitants of Earth. Peacemakers talk about violence but fail to mention the gift of nature and all its wonders trashed and polluted.
The actions of humans toward the environment already kills millions in polluted water and air. Poisons from the finely manicured lawns of America enter our water to build up with poisons of industries refusing to acknowlede need to have accountability toward the Earth.
And,of course, our wars ravage the lands with poisons like Orange or DU. We're too busy to stop the killing with sophisticated and barbaric weapons to think what the aftermath may be even if the killing by humans stop...highly unlikely as that is.
Who is to blame...seems there's enough to go around for all. The bottom line is the victims of all wars since WWII are 80% civilian. Forty percent of that number are children.
We say we love our children but I wonder if we really do. Maybe instead of sending them off to kill a few thousand "bad guys" on their computerized video game there's some life affirming activity to give them.
Studies have shown American children playing video games adjust very quickly to controling Bradley's and other computerized weapon systems. Hand to eye coordination is enhanced to ready them for the next war.
The thought of giving up one form of life for a life that's truly based on the sanctity of living seems only a lyric in John Lennon's "Imagine".
One truth does exist it seems. At the time of judgement, the little children won't be at blame for the horrific destruction and hate in our world. They'll only be the victims of adults alleged to be mature.

Can I ask you a question? Are the moralising diatribes you send to journalists and activists "insults"? If not, why not?

Sorry. I forgot you were saving the world while the rest of us destroy it...

Daniel, Gabriele is one of those people who works really hard to accomplish something good and strongly believes in his moral values.

Unfortuantely, he does this so extremely that he achieves the opposite result.

First all, after reading many of his articles and many of his replies to people's comments, I realized he is just another shade of the same self-righteous people who produced George W. Bush. Those who know they are right, they have all the answers and you are either with them or they won't respect your point of view.

He takes criticism badly and answers either with sarcasm or ignores your comments entirely. Anyhow, keep your comments flowing, it is what makes Gabriele one-sided view of the world less hard to deal with. After all, it is interesting that he asks you if you have anything better to do with you time when he systematically sends email and open letters to people who never read them, only to post them on his own website.

It is interesting that when you accuse Israel of starting the genocide (of course, you don't understand the meaning of this word, or better, as usual you distort facts to push your communist propaganda) of Palitinians but forget to mention that Israel accepted the 1948 UN Resolution and it was the Palestinians who refused it.

Since then, massacres have hit both sides of the contention (to you, somehow, Israeli children blown into pieces by a suicide murderer are not worth your attention, let alone a picture to be placed near the poor Palestinian dead children. Dead Jews somehow for you are not victims.....). While I am all for the right of the Palestinian people to have a land of their own, it is clear that their leaders are more responsible for the current situation than the state of Israel is. Then again, your anti-semitism is so rampant that you would never admit that corruption and incompetence among Palestianian leaders is what is causing their ongoing suffering.

"I saw the people of New York meeting spontaneously in the streets and the squares of Downtown Manhattan. Staying together. Talking and singing for peace. Not revenge. I witnessed how the power used those events for its own agenda."

I am a New Yorker and obviously was here on 9/11. Yes, younger and educated people did tend to gather peacefully and mourn together. But the vast majority of people wanted immediate and swift revenge.

I am a pacifist that doesn't believe in violence as an option, nontheless, I am also someone who believes in telling it as it is. Just like the government had his agenda in channeling people
s anger for its pourposes, so it seems you have your agenda in creating this fictious painting of New York in the aftermath of the attacks.

NYC is not just us in academia, the students, the artists, the environmentalists, who tend to be more open to discussion. New York is also police officers, construction workers, delivery boys, garbage collectors, etc. They were angry, they were scared, they were full of hate, they wanted revenge.

Please stop painting an imaginary world when you address real facts. Stop using just like Bush and his shameful administration the victims of 9/11 for your personal agenda and to support your political views of the world. As you said in a post here, "Hypocrisy is violence too". Yes, true, and this applies to you too and to your preference to "creating" a story rather than sticking to the facts. Shame on you.
