On the road to Damascus
On the road to Damascus
By Gabriele Zamparini
The current horde of barbarians that has brought hell to Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, [with Syria and Iran on the bombing waiting list] may have some few precedents in human history but the racist hypocrisy that goes with it certainly doesn’t.
Reuters reports: “About 100,000 Lebanese have fled their homes to escape the violence. Israel's campaign has killed 230 people, all but 26 of them civilians, and inflicted the heaviest damage on Lebanon since the 1982 Israeli invasion to expel Palestinian guerrillas.” [Wednesday, July 19 UPDATE: "Israeli air strikes on Lebanon killed 56 civilians and a Hizbollah fighter on Wednesday, the deadliest toll of the eight-day-old war, as thousands of villagers fled north and more foreigners were evacuated."]
The Washington junta showed all its compassion through the man [sic!] who represents that gang to the UN
“That's what's happening all over - the devastation wrought in this country in just under a week is truly heartbreaking. Everyone just feels so incredibly sad. Israel isn't trying to support a 'sovereign democratic Lebanon' or whatever it is we're supposed to believe, it's bombing it back to the dark ages - which in Lebanon's case is 1990, after the last one ended.” an email coming from Beirut reads.
As a searchlight piercing the gloomy hypocrisy, journalist and activist Felicity Arbuthnot brings us a piece of reality in her moving “Letters from Baghdadis”:
But that propaganda works perfectly well at home. In Italy for example, Piero Fassino, the man leading what’s left of the party founded by Antonio Gramsci, said that the very “existence” of Israel is “really in danger”. The leader of the largest party in Romano Prodi’s government’s coalition, continued:
On the other Tiber’s bank, just a few days ago the Vatican “strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were ‘an attack’ on a sovereign and free nation. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into ‘a conflict with international repercussions.’”
On July 14 I wrote to the European Union’s Ombudsman:

The Washington junta showed all its compassion through the man [sic!] who represents that gang to the UN
Asked to comment on the deaths in an Israeli air strike of eight Canadian citizens in southern Lebanon Sunday, he [US Ambassador John Bolton] said: "it is a matter of great concern to us... that these civilian deaths are occurring. It's a tragedy."There is no “tragedy” and there is no Middle East “crisis” but a carefully planned project going back months, years, decades and even centuries.
"I think it would be a mistake to ascribe moral equivalence to civilians who die as the direct result of malicious terrorist acts," he added, while defending as "self-defense" Israel's military action, which has had "the tragic and unfortunate consequence of civilian deaths".
“That's what's happening all over - the devastation wrought in this country in just under a week is truly heartbreaking. Everyone just feels so incredibly sad. As a searchlight piercing the gloomy hypocrisy, journalist and activist Felicity Arbuthnot brings us a piece of reality in her moving “Letters from Baghdadis”:
A's letter ended with an illuminating insight into American tactics in Iraq: 'The Americans keep Iraq in a state of absolute chaos, they call it: 'positive instability.'On the receiving end of our Free World’s benevolence the brainwashing propaganda doesn’t work and people can still think properly and put us to shame.
“Every democratic country, and therefore also Italy, must make clear to the Islamic world and to its ruling elites that never the democratic world, and in the first place Europe, will accept to put in discussion or even to put in precariousness the State of Israel and its existence”.But don’t blame just the hot temperatures of the Italian summer. The Jewish Lobby organized a vigil pro-Israel, present much of the Italian nomenklatura together with the Israeli Ambassador to Italy, the above mentioned Fassino, the Zionist Mayor of Rome Valter Veltroni and – life can be really ironic sometimes – the former neo-fascist [but still very right-wing] and former Italian Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini [Enjoy some photos here: 1 2 3 4]
On the other Tiber’s bank, just a few days ago the Vatican “strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were ‘an attack’ on a sovereign and free nation. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into ‘a conflict with international repercussions.’”
"In particular, the Holy See deplores right now the attack on Lebanon, a free and sovereign nation, and assures its closeness to these people who already have suffered so much to defend their independence (…) The right of defence on the part of a state does not exempt it from its responsibility to respect international law, particularly regarding the safeguarding of civilian populations”Usually the Italian politicians violently compete to kiss the Pope’s hand. What happened this time?
On July 14 I wrote to the European Union’s Ombudsman:
Dear Sir,In the same e-mail I also forwarded to the European Ombudsman the e-mail I had sent to the Israeli Ambassador to the UK the day before
With regard to the current massive crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Government of Israel, will the EU do anything at all besides the usual blah blah blah?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Gabriele Zamparini
Italian and European Union Citizen
London
From the efficient and democratic Europe the reply arrived today:
Dear Madam, [my name can be very confusing, by the way]A petition to the EU Parliament? To sign it we can always use the blood of those slaughtered in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon [with Syria and Iran on the petition waiting list].
Thank your for your recent e-mail.
The role of the European Ombudsman is to investigate complaints concerning maladministration by institutions and bodies of the European Community. Complaints which concern the merits of a political decision taken in the exercise of political authority do not raise issues of maladministration. The issue that you raise appears therefore to be outside the Ombudsman's mandate.
The European Ombudsman does however take all complaints seriously and tries, wherever possible, to offer alternative advice as to who to contact. In your case, I can only suggest that you address a petition to the European Parliament. This possibility is open to any citizen or resident of the European Union, individually or in association with others. Petitions can touch upon any subject which comes within the European Union's fields of activity and which affects the citizen directly. You can find further details (and submit a petition online) on the following webpage: [ link ]
I hope you will find this information helpful.
Yours sincerely,
Secretariat of the European Ombudsman

Zamparini, how come you never send letters and emails to the terrorist government of China??? Tibet has been invaded for decades, the Dalai Lama had to find refuge in exile, hundreds of their temples have been raised to the ground, thousands killed. Yet, you only indignant with Israel....
The Chinese government has killed thousands of paceful Falun Gong members, even used them unwillingly to harvest their organs for wealthy Westerners (as demonstrated in Canada last week), yet, never a word from you to defend these victims and condem the Communist terrorist and murderer government of China.
Not only you are an anti-semite, you also seem to forgive anything that any Communist regime does. Isn't it time to toss that Lotta Continua membership card?
Israel was created in 1946 by the British. Since then, millions have moved there and have made that country their own. Are you suggesting that we earase Israel from the face of the earth??? Is that you solution?
The Italian government is absolutely right to recognize the right of Jewish people to have a land of their own. And so are the heirs of the italian left. You use Gramsci as an example.... why not Lenin or Stalin??? their hands are still covered in blood decades after they are dead.
According to your logic, Italy should return South Tirol to Austria, France should return Alsace and Lorraine, the Check Republic should return Sudetenland, and so on. It is historically absurd.
While a peaceful solution MUST be found to the Israeli-Palestinian situation, this MUST include the existence of Israel. Reading your antisemite propaganda (calling Communist Veltroni a Zionist, you know you hate Jews).
So, you have been attacking everyone who supported the existence of Israel. What is your solution, antisemite?
So tiring that the term anti-semite can be bandied about still, even as Israeli bombs fall on the citizens of Gaza and Lebanon and we discuss the actions of a state that is one of the world's greatest military forces.
Palestinians are semites too, and Israel is too powerful to continue to play the victim.
Thankfully, there are plenty of Israelis who are beginning to rally against the murderous regime in power (or, the Zionists; choose your terminology). It is my hope that confidence in war and occupation from within Israel will dwindle and die sooner than later, and the peaceful Israelis who are bravely protesting their governments actions will have the chance to build real relationships in the region from scratch.
Thanks for the article, Gabriele.

I just want to comment on that comment regarding the Chinese government. From what I know, Gabriele Zamparini is not an omniscient and omnipotent Zorro who is there to right all the wrongs done in every part of the world. He is trying to do a little something about issues where the government of his own country is involved. The terrorist government of Israel is doing its dirty job with the direct help, both military and diplomatic, of the US, UK and other European governments. This is not the Chinese case.
Instead of blaming Gasbriele for what he is doing, why don't you emulate him? Are you doing anything to help the Falun Gong members? If you do, good on you. If you don't, why are you wasting your time criticising what others do to help innocent people in different parts of the world?
By the way, the Chinese government has nothing to do with Communism. I am in China right now and all I see around me is naked Capitalism coupled with dictatorship.
As for that accusation of anti-semitism, I don't have much to add to Derek's comment.
Daniel
"The terrorist government of Israel is doing its dirty job with the direct help, both military and diplomatic, of the US, UK and other European governments. This is not the Chinese case."
Really? The US, UK and other European governments went to war in Iraq justifying it as the removal of a dictator who had done so much harm to its people (let's include the Kurds amongs "his people, although they really were just victims).
The same governments completly the Tibetan or Falun Gong issues and instead build extremely profitable relationships with the Chinese government. The same countries have no problems sending their teams there for the Olympic Games and their corporations rewarding the Chinese with lavish sponsorships to finance the Games.
Trading, importing and exporting, investing, creating partnerships with mass murderers is, in my opinion, very much being involved. If you cannot see how US and European hands are dirty of blood, you are dreaming.
I am not against the resolution of the Israeli situation, I for all would never be able to do any violence to anyone. But despise the silngle minded and hypocritical singling out of one country/perpetrator while ignoring worst ones. Israel kills a fraction of the people the Chinese kill reguilarly. Israel randomly kills, China has a systematic approach to arresting, farming organs from living people, killing, punishing.
When we have a country that acts like German Nazis, I found it hypocritical that all the attention always goes to Israel. Smells fishy, smells political.
And yes, although not Chinese, I have and am involved in many ways against the murderous Chinese government. In all honesty, I spent most of my resources and energy in the issue of China/Tibet rather than Falun Gong, mostly because most seem obvlivious to the vanishing of an entire country but mark in red any killing of Israel. Why are the deads in Asia so less important?
"Trading, importing and exporting, investing, creating partnerships with mass murderers is, in my opinion, very much being involved. If you cannot see how US and European hands are dirty of blood, you are dreaming."
I am very much aware of this. The difference with Israel is the direct MILITARY and DIPLOMATIC help it receives from Western governments. It's easier to put pressure on governments whose members are elected than on corporations who are not accountable to anyone except their shareholders.
I didn't imply either that one should not try to help the Tibetan people or the Falun Gong members. It's all about reducing suffering in the world. You might be able to do that in regards to the Chinese and Gabriele is doing the same thing with the Palestinians, the Lebanese or Iraqis. Why should you criticise him for that? What if someone accused you of being a racist, a Chinese hater, just because you criticised the actions of the Chinese government as you have done with Gabriele for criticising the actions of the Israeli government? As far as I know, he never wrote anything against the Jews to deserve the accusation of anti-semitism.
"When we have a country that acts like German Nazis, I found it hypocritical that all the attention always goes to Israel."
Israel is precisely "a country that acts like German Nazis". Israel is a racist state that only recognises Jews as full citizens. It has one of the most formidable military powers in the world and it has invaded almost every neighbouring country.
"Why are the deads in Asia so less important?"
Nobody said the deads in Asia are less important. Or those in Africa or in Latin America. Whatever one can do to help reduce their number should always be welcomed by compassionate people.
Cheers
Daniel
"Nobody said the deads in Asia are less important."
A european group escalating the Himalayas finally managed to provide evidence of the killing and genocide going on in Tibet.
A Frenchman photographed and filmed nuns and children trying to pass the border between Tibet and India. They were surprised by Chinese soldiers who shot one of the nuns in the head in cold blood. Others have been arrested (mostly children!!!).
A whole country has been stolen, its people are either killed or forced to exile or to live a life as 2nd class citizens.
Their religious leader has been forced for decades to exile in India. It is like saying the Pope could not return to Rome. In addition, the successor to the Dalai Lama has been kidnapped by the Chinese authority who have imposed a successor of their own chosing (what would you say if the Chinese government had chosen the Pope to succeed John Paul II instead of the Cardinals).
I laugh when you call me racist for suggesting the Chinese government is a monstrous structure: first and foremost its victims are Chinese citizens!!! all the Falung Gong practitioners murdered and arrested are Chinese!!!! how can I be a racist against Chinese people when I am the one pointing at the abuses and atrocities they are subjected by the barbarians that run their government?
Yet, one year later, I don't see one mention to this issue at all. More and more attacks against Israel, but not one word against the imperialistic and dictatorial behavior of communist China, despite the fact that the next Olympic Games will take place there. It doesn't bother anyone that China is self celebrating itself in all the magazine and TV ads while it is systematically destroying an entire civilization and its people (a civilization of peaceful people who didn't even have an army!!!)?
A permanet member of the UN council and not a word against their murders? yet, Gabriele is quick to draw his sword to defend Palestinians and attack Imperialist USA and Zionist Israel. Why Palestinian are worth Gabriele's attention so intensily, but Tibetan victims are left unmentioned, not one single thought about them?
I don't understand how one can accuse "capitalist" USA all the time but never say a bad word against the communist monsters that run China.....unless, that is, one is a communist himself. And judging by the anti-US, anti-Israel agenda of Gabriele, we can easily assume we will never read any attacks from him against the imperialism of China. After all, probably Chairman Mao was one of childhood heros.
