Interesting piece. It does seem that in this world, if one murders, gasses, tortures and electrifies enough people one will be ultimately nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. It worked for Hitler and Kissinger among others - why not Hussein?
I wonder - what do you think would have been a just process with regard to Saddam Hussein? Do you think a re-trial would be in order? Perhaps you don't see the need for a trial at all? What would have been the best way forward, in your opinion? I am interested in what you think.

What's astonishing is they went to such grand lengths to hold this big trial in what is the middle of a war zone where people are dying every day, and giving him this chance to mouth off and spread his propaganda. He clearly should have been shot on sight as soon as they found him.

Thanks Aly. What I think? Isn't it clear? I think this war of aggression, the supreme international crime, should have never happened. Now I think that our ruthless leaders should be brought to justice. The only justice would have been to restore international law, as I wrote many times. But the anti-war movement has helped the Bush-Blair's imperialistic plans by abandoning international law and the right of self determination of Peoples.
Thanks for the Guardian's article. Unfortunately I can't post any comments over there since the liberal Guardian closed my account time ago, when I tried to get the attention of the media on the lancet study. The comment is really free?

Yes - I fully agree with you here. We live in hope that one day Blair and his co-murderers will also face trial somewhere.

The clock of international law stopped on March 20, 2003. The enormity of this event will sign the world history forever. That clock tells us that Saddam Hussein is the legitimate president of Iraq, whatever opinion people may have on his legacy. Ok - I'll take another look.
That clock tells us that Saddam Hussein is the legitimate president of Iraq, whatever opinion people may have on his legacy.
Hussein, who came to prominence in a CIA funded coup designed to keep out commies, and went on to be the flag bearer for Reagan, Rumsfeld, and Co has no more claim to legitimacy than the current regime.
He was and remains a murderer and a torturer of Pinochet status. Pretty simple really. What should or should not happen to him is for the Iraqis to decide, but he never had any legitimacy as far as I can see.
I'm sorry Gabriele. To me this is no different than the US killing off any of the other multitude of vicious dictators that they helped into power and no longer care for, deplorable, but hardly
one of the most disgraceful pages of infamy's history.

Gabriele, it's pretty well known from opinion poll research, and from reporters, which includes famously antiwar reporters, that the vast majority of Shiites and Kurds - three quarters of the Iraqi population - believe that Saddam Hussein was a thug who murdered his way into power and remained there by a reign of terrible fear.
Given that fact, can you see why your assertion that Saddam Hussein is still the "legitimate ruler of Iraq" is offensive to most Iraqis? And indeed, most people around the world?
If someone murdered their way into power against the wishes of the population in your country, wouldn't you be shocked if someone claimed they were the "legitimate ruler?"
I think your support for the tyrant and thug Saddam Hussein is extremely misguided and counterproductive to the causes you espouse. We know from history that many people have been known to fall victim to the personality cult that surrounds dictators - there are still some people who are fond of figures like Stalin and Hilter even today. I'd hate for you to be another one of those ignorant types of people.

Shia people went to elect because their Ayatullahs told them that if they did not, they will end up in Hell. Kurds went to vote because their leaders told them that in this way they will have their own indepdent KURDISTAN. Those who watched the show trials of Saddam Hussein, discovered the amount of lies and fables. In fact the Trial itself, though a show , helped us know the truth about all these propaganda myths. An Iraqi writer wrote a study (in Arabic) about the lies of the so-called witnesses, forensic experts and clues. Not sure why you think this would sound far fetched to me. Actually it sounds perfectly reasonable. I'm not sure that this is the point that Gabriele is making (I have misunderstood him before, so I try to be clear). If this is the point that you are making that's fine. In fact the link to the Guardian article that I posted discussed exactly this issue. It's interesting, if you haven't read it.
